7 Women of Color In Tech Influencers To Follow On Instagram Today

As many others do, we enjoy social media—of course, we're on it!—we think it’s a helpful tool to communicate, keep up to date, build communities, and many other things. Here at EMMSTECH we encourage some kind of deliberate scrolling on Instagram (not sure if that term exists 😅): I mean, scrolling through meaningful content.

The idea is to use social media to grow professionally and personally, while also watching videos of cute kittens from time to time, like this one:

Enough of cute kittens! Let's get back to the main point. We've been keeping our eyes on women in tech influencers, and we selected seven Women of Color in tech influencers from Instagram to highlight their work. Why? Because they do an amazing job! Let’s see:

“Get tips, career advice and resources for new/ junior techies”

Omotola Shogunle is a software engineer with lots of knowledge to share. 

Her reels are fun and full of experiences and resources. In her bio she has a guide called “How To Break Into The Tech Industry”: Informative and engaging, plus she provides a listening tool for the guide (points for inclusion!). ⭐️

Omotola also has lots of interaction with her followers. She posts stories inviting followers to ask her about anything. She replies with helpful advice and resources.

Stephanie is a chemical engineer who switched careers to become a software engineer. She currently works at PayPal and is a tech career coach. 

In her Instagram she offers advice on writing your career change resume, how to land a tech job, how to get ready for a job interview, and project ideas for your CV.

She also has a website where she offers mentorship programs and resume revamps. There are lots of testimonials! She has done a great job promoting tech careers! ⚡️

Lidia de la Cruz is a software engineer and digital creator based in New York. She’s also a founding member of Baddies In Tech. Lidia has been a speaker at Diversitech Summit on various occasions, including the one coming this year. She has also been a mentor for several WOC in tech communities. 💁🏽‍♀️

On her IG account she shares tech resources and some of her experience working in tech—life as a Dev. She shares her knowledge about programming languages, and what it is to be a consultant developer.

“Career tips + resources for new techies 💡”

Kedasha Kerr is a software engineer that shares with her followers her journey through tech. She uses multiple channels to invite others to pursue careers in tech.  👩🏾‍💻

In her bio, you will find a link to her “free get into tech guide”, as well as to her website. She shares lots of information about starting a career in tech, including which are the best programming languages to learn, and courses to learn specific skills such as cloud computing. 

Her enthusiasm for tech is what I like most about Kedasha—besides the fact that she shares her knowledge with the world. She’s very passionate and cheerful, it’s almost contagious! 🤗

She’s also very transparent and honest when it comes to sharing her experiences in this journey: Here’s one of my favorite posts, related to her bootcamp experience.

“✨ Helping beginner web developers learn to code!”… And basically that’s how I arrived at her Instagram profile. 

Jessica Chan is a web developer who shares her knowledge through courses and free resources using different channels: Instagram, GitHub, YouTube and her own website.

She helps bring order to the chaotic tech journey that some of us can experience. If you're a beginner, we invite you to read her web development guide. 💻

Hosanna Hali is an Azure Specialist at Microsoft and Diversity and Inclusion advocate. 

In her account, she shares tips and resources for studying and working in tech. She explains her journey in tech while ensuring women get to know how to seize opportunities in the tech industry—even with no coding skills! 👀

Hosanna has plenty of content related to “know your worth” and how to search for jobs in tech. 👩🏾‍💻

Moreover, she has a YouTube channel where she shares more of her work at Microsoft, including how to land a job there.

Vicky Mei is a web developer and YouTuber based in New York. 

As you might expect—as her username suggests—Vicky's Instagram provides informative and humorous content! 😆 She makes things easier for newbies who may feel a little lost. 

On her Instagram, she talks about software developer trends, how to learn JavaScript faster, and mistakes to avoid as a developer. Her content is a mix of technical, professional and personal tips.

Regarding her journey in tech, the message is clear and loud: It’s never too late to start a career in tech! As she mentions in several posts, she started at 28, and now she’s a full-time software developer and part-time content creator, with a community of 33.5k followers. 🎉
